What is Mixtape?

Mixtape is a unique heritage app that uses soundwalks to uncover and share the often-overlooked musical history of UK towns. We work with places that want to celebrate their heritage, strengthen pride of place, and challenge negative perceptions through community-led storytelling.

Geolocated Audio
Mixtape uses GPS-enabled soundwalks to reveal the hidden stories of a town through location-based oral histories, community memories, and original music, turning everyday streets into immersive heritage experiences.

We don't just point out old buildings. We craft experiential, high-quality audio trails that transform local stories into compelling listening experiences, helping audiences connect emotionally with the people, culture, and identity of a place.

Measurable Impact
Mixtape helps local councils turn storytelling into measurable outcomes. Councils gain real-time insights into how people engage with their town, enabling them to track cultural participation, support local destinations, and demonstrate the value of investment in placemaking, heritage, and community engagement initiatives.

Aldershot Mixtape

Our first trail was the Aldershot Mixtape, a location-based musical audio walk that guides listeners through Aldershot's rich and diverse cultural heritage.

It features a variety of sounds, from the indie vibes of the legendary Buzz Club to the lively atmosphere of Victorian dance halls and the hedonistic early days of rave music. You'll hear a blend of synth, punk and folk songs, along with the distant chants of the Aldershot football club. By combining music, sound design, and interviews, the walk creates a richly layered experience through the town's unique history.

Mixtape collaborates with local artists, musicians, filmmakers, and storytellers to create authentic place-based experiences rooted in community voices and local culture.

Impact

In 2025, we launched the Aldershot Mixtape, a prototype audio-AR trail that transformed local musical heritage into location-responsive storytelling experience.

Supported by funding from Rushmoor Borough Council and UCA, and backed by the Forward 4 Wiz Trust, the project demonstrated how local musical heritage can be transformed into meaningful community engagement and pride of place.
